Unholy Playhouse

Building a sanctuary that outlives its walls

Sydney keeps losing the spaces that matter – the intimate, independent, community-grown venues where scenes begin and artists take their first risks. In the months around Unholy's opening, Bar Freda's, Mary's Underground and the Stonewall Hotel all closed. Kat Dopper – founder of Heaps Gay and Pleasures Playhouse – set out to answer that loss with a year-long home for independent artists inside St John the Evangelist, a sandstone church on Kent Street built in 1868 and deconsecrated in the 1930s. Bar, stage and dance floor for 200, under one gothic roof.

We acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the traditional custodians of the land on which we live and work. Sovereignty was never ceded. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the country.
